Mainstream Media Deviates from the Script on Global Warming

The story seemed innocent enough. The Toronto Star reporting that recent good weather may save the city from breaking a record. A late burst of temperatures in the double digits may yet save this March from going down as the coldest in more than 40 years, according to Environment Canada's senior climatologist David Phillips.

Phillips is reminding Torontonians to think back to a year ago.

"We had almost a centimeter of snow on April 13 and on May 8, for gosh sakes, we had a trace of snow," Phillips said. "My sense is that it's still early to write the obituary on winter."

Snow in Toronto in May? What about all this global warming? What about Rick Mercer’s one-ton challenge? What about Kyoto and the fact that billions of Canadian dollars need to be shipped off to third world nations to buy emissions credits?

Scientists the world over have conspired to convince people that the Earth is over-heating and technology and progress are to blame. Big business and people with SUVs are turning out too much CO2 that is trapping the heat in the planet like a big green house. The polar ice cap is melting. Polar bears are starving. We need to raise taxes and create more government programs the liberals tell us.

Now the truth comes out that Toronto is experiencing the coldest winter in 40 years. Winnipeg recently had the coldest winter in 80 years. The evidence that global warming is wrong continues to pile up.

Politically, the global warming issue is the best excuse the liberals have for raising taxes and continuing to grow this oversized government. $5 billion dollars was earmarked in this year’s federal budget to reduce our CO2 emissions under the Kyoto plan. The federal liberals have absolutely no plan on how that money will be spent. Canadians have been told for years that the next generation of Canadians will bake under a glaring sun if we do not fix global warming.

The liberals have gone so far as to include reforms related to the Kyoto accord in an omnibus budget bill. At issue is a move that would delete the word "toxic" from the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Eliminating the word toxic would allow the liberals to regulate substances under law including: carbon dioxide, methane and four other greenhouse gases targeted by Kyoto. Regulations would involve raising taxes and creating new branches of government.

If the omnibus budget bill fails to pass, new elections could be called. The liberals feel that Canadians are sufficiently duped on global warming that they would welcome an election on the issue. Paul Martin's liberals believe Stephen Harper would be making a major mistake to force an election over Ottawa's Kyoto implementation plan, which the Liberals say enjoys widespread support in the key electoral battleground of Ontario. This is the very same electoral battleground experiencing the coldest winter in 40 years.

The liberals will not be able to count on the key electoral battleground of Ontario if the mainstream media keeps deviating from the script.

Toronto Star Deserves Recognition for Its Extreme Political Bias

The Toronto Star is by far the most sickeningly pro-liberal/anti-Conservative newspaper in the country. When Judy Sgro resigned from cabinet amid scandal, the Toronto Star came to the rescue with seven articles in two days, pumping the liberals and dumping on critics and accusers alike.

Below is five days worth of headlines from March 22 to March 26. With one sixth of the country, over 5 million people, living in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) it is no wonder the liberals have such a death grip on this country.

By-elections are notoriously unreliable barometers of a governing party's performance. So, there should be no cause for alarm among Liberals that Premier Dalton McGuinty is zero for two in by-elections since taking office in October, 2003. Robert Benzie explains.

Verdict: Pro-liberal. If this was an article about conservatives losing two bi-elections the headline in the Toronto Star would be: Conservatives Lose another Bi-Election - Voter Regret is Obvious.

The cynicism of the Alberta government on the issue of gay marriage seems to know no bounds.

Verdict: Anti-conservative. It should be noted that Ralph Klein’s views on same-sex marriage are the same as the liberal party’s position on same-sex marriage only 2 short years ago. When the Supreme Court refused to rewrite the definition of marriage for the liberals, the liberals were forced out of the closet and now they admit this is something they favor.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper angrily vowed today to vote against Kyoto-related provisions in a Liberal money bill, setting up a game of chicken that could bring a snap election no party claims to want.

Verdict: Anti-Conservative. Yes, we know…the Conservatives are all a bunch of angry hate filled rich white guys that hate the environment and want to poison the air and water to make big companies rich. That is why they want to force an early election.

Stronach, party fighting – March 24, 2005

Belinda Stronach could be barred from any future Conservative leadership race if a dispute over outstanding fees from last year's race is not resolved, party officials are suggesting.

Verdict: Anti-Conservative. The liberals are embroiled in scandals that involve the squandering of billions of taxpayer dollars. But why would the Toronto Star publish news of the Gomery inquiry when they can exadurate stories of Conservatives eating their own?

WASHINGTON—the vote by the U.S. Congress to allow the federal courts to take over the Terri Schiavo case has created distress among some conservatives who say that lawmakers violated a cornerstone of conservative philosophy by intervening in the ruling of a state court.

Verdict: Anti-Conservative. What a surprise. Here is another story about divisions among Conservatives, even if it is about American Conservatives. Let the reader understand, there is no more important cornerstone of conservative philosophy than protecting innocent life.

Opposition parties are warning they might vote against legislation implementing the federal budget if the Liberals include new Kyoto provisions - a move that could bring down the minority government.

Verdict: Pro-liberal. This story chronicles how the liberals are champions of the environment. Anyone who would stand in the way of our beloved liberals is just lustful for power and wants to force an election that Canadians do not want. Don’t forget to punish anyone who would dare stand in the way of our beloved liberals if there is an early election Canada!

The Ontario government will "revisit" its promise to balance the books by the end of its first mandate in 2007, Finance Minister Greg Sorbara said today.

Verdict: Pro-liberal. Ontario liberals promised if they got elected they would not raise taxes, they lied. Ontario liberals promised not to introduce user fees for health care, they lied. Ontario liberals promised to balance the books by the end of their first mandate and with the current budget $6 billion in the red, the liberals will now have to “revisit” that promise. God forbid the Toronto Star would actually come out and say the liberals lied about that.

Several young Tories are planning to defect to the Liberal party in the wake of the Conservatives' controversial decision not to create a youth wing.

Verdict: Anti-Conservative. The Toronto Star managed to find a bunch of young ones willing to say they are leaving the party simply because the conservatives refuse to set up a play pen for them like the one the liberals have. Most of Canada’s youth appreciate being treated like adults in an adult political party like the CPC. KiN I Hav sUm mOre canDeh pliZ mR. toRonoH stAr mAN pliz!! isLe bE uR beStiEst FreNd & deNounCe mY paRtee!

Prime Minister Paul Martin's government has been let off the hook for failing to hold a vote on missile defense in the House of Commons.

Verdict: Pro-liberal. Paul Martin said Parliament would be consulted on any deal involving missile defense. Paul Martin later said Canada will not be taking part on missile defense and he made this decision without ever consulting Parliament. We call this a bold faced lie in Winnipeg. Apparently this is called dodging a bullet in Toronto.

On the eve of a summit meeting with the presidents of the United States and Mexico, Canadians are giving Prime Minister Paul Martin an overwhelming thumbs-up for his refusal to join the U.S. missile defense project, a new poll suggests. About 57 per cent of Canadians supported Martin's decision, according to the poll.

Verdict: Pro-liberal. We are a nation of people who watch our liberal politicians stomp on Dubya dolls on state run media (CBC), hear our politicians call Americans bastard and accuse every American friend as an honorary member of the coalition of idiots. The sycophantic mainstream media is more than willing to echo everything liberal politicians say, so it should come as no surprise that slightly more than half of Toronto, when asked in a self-serving poll if Canada should join missile defense, say no.

Ontario's newly revised $6-billion deficit is another reason the federal government has to cut the province a break on equalization payments, Premier Dalton McGuinty said today.

Verdict: Pro-liberal. Would the Toronto Star ever blame failed liberal tax and spend policy for a $6 billion dollar deficit? Of course they wouldn’t. It is not their fault that the federal government short changes the poor provincial government of liberal Dalton McGuinty. The Toronto Star certainly never cut Mike Harris any slack when the province was in the red. But now that liberals rule Ontario, the province needs some slack from the feds. There is just one problem. The federal government is run by liberals as well.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper may have kicked a chair and a few balloons in frustration at the Tory policy convention this past weekend. But he left Montreal armed with an 84 per cent vote of confidence from a party that has been sadly split in the past. Just as important, he can now fight the next election less hobbled by a strident right-wing agenda.

Verdict: Anti-Conservative.

All these articles were printed between March 22 and March 26. That is twelve pro-liberal/anti-conservative articles in 5 days. You know the Toronto Star is running low on ink and newsprint when they say Tories struggle for focus hobbled by a strident right-wing agenda.

The Toronto Star: out of ink, out of newsprint and out of canDeh!

Advocates of Legalizing Prostitution Request $200,000 to Tour Brothels

Some prostitution advocates will be taking an all expenses paid trip to the world’s brothels courtesy of the Canadian Taxpayer. Members of the justice subcommittee looking into decriminalizing prostitution will be traveling to Britain, The Netherlands, Sweden and Reno, Nevada. The committee has already approved the trip and is now requesting $200,000 of federal funds to pay for it.

The article in the Winnipeg Sun describes the trip an education seminar for members of the committee. MPs would benefit from visiting these areas and meeting with law enforcement agencies, counselors and brothel owners.

The biggest advocate of legalizing prostitution in Canada is socialist NDP MP Libby Davies. According to Libby Davies, “In the U.K. they actually allow women to work out of their own homes. The Netherlands, of course, is a well-known situation where they have a fully operating area for the sex trade and I think we're very interested to see what the impact of that is from various perspectives.”

The $143,678 travel budget request for Liverpool, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Stockholm includes $62,840 for transportation, $25,328 for accommodation, $12,000 for food and $43,500 for miscellaneous items like interpretation, official gifts and fees. The traveling party includes three staff members.

It is disgusting that the liberals would spend the hard earned money of Canadians on a sex trade holiday in a bid to bring legalized prostitution to our country. It does not take a $200,000 holiday to Amsterdam to learn about the social decay that legalizing the sex trade would bring.

Consider the crime wave that has swept Germany following its move to legalize the sex trade. Reported cases of human trafficking more than doubled between 1993 and 1996. Women from all over Europe and Asia have been kidnapped and sold, to be used as sex slaves in German brothels. The best estimates are that between 60,000 and 200,000 women are working the sex trade in Germany and about half are foreigners.

The contempt that liberals have for the Canadian taxpayer is astounding.

Socialist NDP Groping in the Dark for Relevance

The Winnipeg Sun published an article today titled 'Peg MP takes aim at safety council.

“A Winnipeg Member of Parliament is furious with the Canada Safety Council after the organization declared yesterday that putting warning labels on bottles of alcohol is a bad idea. The non-profit group, whose mission is to promote safety and reduce preventable deaths in Canada, sent a letter yesterday to Ontario MP Bonnie Brown, who chairs a committee studying the issue, saying warning labels on alcohol would serve no purpose and are essentially a waste of money.”

After reading that opening paragraph you just have to know that a member of the socialist NDP party is at the heart of the story. Judy Wasylycia-Leis, the socialist MP for Winnipeg North, says she is flabbergasted at the Canada Safety Council for taking this position. Judy was quoted as saying,

“It sounds to me like they're nothing more than a mouthpiece for the brewers' association. Their argument is incomprehensible, irresponsible and doesn't deserve any validity at all.”

The Canada Safety Council explained in a letter that warning labels will deliver no benefit to Canadian society, and more importantly, will divert resources and attention away from proven measures and personal interventions that can actually make a difference. The letter said that there is no evidence warnings cut down on alcohol consumption or incidents of drunk driving, and that pregnant women who drink do not need warnings, they need treatment. To this NDP Judy replied, "This is exactly the argument we're getting from the beer companies."

Canada’s extreme left-wing never learns. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been poured into anti-smoking advertising campaigns and anti-smoking labels on cigarette packages with no effect on the smoking rate. Now the socialists want to extend this same useless approach to alcohol. Is it not enough that their extreme left-wing ideology gets them only a dozen seats in Parliament every election? Do the socialists not realize how irrelevant they are that they need to champion such worthless causes as warning labels on alcohol?

Symbolism over substance continues to be the slogan of the socialist NDP as they grope in the dark for relevance.

Conservative Party Poised to Govern – Stephen Harper Receives 84% Approval

The Conservative Party convention ended on a happy note. Although the mainstream media was determined to portray Conservatives as deeply divided over a non-issue, Conservative delegates gave Stephen a whopping 84% approval.

On the issue of same-sex marriage Conservatives re-affirmed their support for the traditional definition of marriage that defines a union of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others. In the interest of appearing moderate and mainstream, the party has chosen to extend all the rights and benefits of marriage to same-sex unions. The Conservatives want to appear so moderate, they even posted a photo of how Mr. Harper would look with pink hair.

Other issues debated included abortion, where it was decided not to pursue legislation limiting a woman’s right to choose. Conservatives rejected the Kyoto accord while accepting the responsibility Canada has to its allies including participation in ballistic missile defense. The new party also rejected MP recalls, referendums and votes on all constitutional amendments. Fixed election dates and proportional representation were also abandoned.

Another issue that was shot down was a proposal to create a youth wing of the party. The liberal party has a youth wing and the extreme left-wing ideology that flows out it makes you wonder who raises those kids. The Young liberals of Canada are on the forefront of legalizing drugs and prostitution. The Conservative decision not to form a youth wing was a smart choice. Conservative youth are already part of the mainstream party. We do not need to tell our youth to go play in the sandbox until they come of age as the liberals do.

The only downside of the weekend was a proposal made by party member Scott Reid. He proposed giving more weight to conservative ridings with more delegates, something that Peter McKay opposed when the PC and Alliance merged. This incident was a perfect example of how everyone has a voice in the Conservative Party, but ultimately the majority of party delegates decide the issues. Scott Reid’s proposal was shot down by an overwhelming majority, but it gave the ultra-left leaning mainstream media an opening to write endless stories about how divided the party was. It was a non-issue.

The Conservative Party comes out of this convention poised to win the next federal election and govern our nation.

Mainstream Media Pounces on Conservative Show of Weakness

The Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail both delivered stories today, bashing conservatives for abstaining from a vote. The vote was a confidence motion that would have brought down the government and sparked an early election. In both articles the mainstream press used the opportunity to paint the Conservatives as bunch of spineless politicians that are not doing their job.

The liberal media called it the largest abstention in Canadian parliamentary history “They [Conservatives] sat in the House of Commons and didn’t cast a single vote,” is how the press reported it, “As Liberals passed their budget over the objections of the Bloc Quebecois and the NDP.”

The press then went running to the radial left-wing party leaders for sound bites.

"This idea of coming to Ottawa only to sit on your hands when the most important vote comes up. . . . He [Stephen Harper] wants to pretend he's voting against it while at the same time holding the government in power on the budget. I don't think he's fooling anyone," said Jack Layton, leader of the socialist NDP.

"I imagine that during the next election campaign their slogan will be 'vote for us, we won't show up,' '' said Bloc Quebecois leader, Gilles Duceppe.

The liberal Finance Minister was quoted as saying, “They obviously concluded that this budget was sufficiently strong that they did not want to risk their political position on an election. That says the budget is popular with Canadians.”

This is the latest example of classic liberal bias in the media. After spending the first week of February sowing the seeds of voter resentment over the possibility that Conservatives may bring down this minority government, now they are painting them as spineless cowards for not bringing down this minority government. Back then, they wanted Canadians to go to the polls resentful, with a vendetta to punish the Conservatives for forcing them to vote too much.

One thing is for sure, the Conservative Party has to get over this fear of forcing another election. They simply cannot wait for the press to say something nice about them and give them a bounce in the polls. The sooner they bring down this government the better it will be for all Canadians.

If Iraqis would risk terrorist attacks, mortars, suicide bombers and death in order to cast a ballot in an election, then Canadians will survive marking an X twice in one year.

Canadian Ascension to the European Union – A Hot Topic in Germany

After posting a series on Canada, the European Union and the New World Order, others are voicing the thoughts of the Blue Maple Leaf. This three part series dealt with the poor state of Canada-US relations and how liberal policy is pushing Canada toward joining the EU. The articles were written on February 27th, February 28th, March 1st and March 2nd.

Yesterday, Ben echoed our views on his blog called ‘The Tiger in Winter’. In his March 7th article titled A Modest Proposal he explains how Canadian foreign policy and liberal disdain for military spending have resulted in poor relations with America. His solution to the problem, short of Conservatives getting elected and undoing the damage, is to join the European Union.

Ben also mentions the benefit that EU membership would have on the Quebec sovereignty issue. He writes, “Once we were within the European super state, sovereignty-association would be dead-easy to manage, and there would be no giant hit to the financial markets that a present-day Quebec secession would bring. We could still hang out in Montreal without going through customs--after all, aside from England, its one big happy Schengen customs union, right?”

German newspapers have also offered commentary. On March 3rd, the German newspaper Spiegel Online published an article titled ‘It’s Time for Canada to Join the EU’. This article states, “This week's decision by Ottawa to reject Washington's missile defense plan shows that politically, Canadians are from Venus and Americans from Mars.”

Other German papers added comments including Handelsblatt. They wrote, "Canadians believe they view the world in a more 'international' way that they believe they are more European when it comes to their views of 'social values'."

The center-left Sueddeutsche Zeitung says, "Once again Canada and the US have no understanding of each other. The Americans see the latest decision of their northerly neighbor not to participate in the missile defense program as a slap in the face. With the rejection of the missile defense system, the Americans now have more doubts than ever about the Canadians' reliability. Washington, it says, has carefully masked its rage over the decision.”

The signs are everywhere concerning possible Canadian membership in the European Union.

Legalized Prostitution in Canada – A liberal Convention Priority

The federal liberals continue to race Europe to the bottom of the moral bucket. In the last 13 years this political party has pushed decriminalized marijuana. They have created programs to give out free needles and crack kits to drug users and free heroin to addicts. Safe injection sites have been erected so that high paid doctors could be diverted from providing health care to supervising people as they break the law by using hard drugs. A bill is now working its way through Parliament to rewrite the definition of marriage to include same-sex marriages. And now we learn that legalizing prostitution is a priority of the liberal party.

The liberals have long been supporters of legalizing prostitution. Liberal senator Mac Harb believes it is a great idea. When Mac Harb was the liberal MP for Ottawa Center, he introduced a private members bill to legalize prostitution in 2000. Libby Davies, the socialist NDP Member of Parliament is working on a similar bill to legalize prostitution now. The justice committee is looking into the issue.

For insight into the nightmare that legal prostitution would mean for Canada, we can use the example of Germany. In Germany, prostitution is legal and women under the age of 55 that have been unemployed for over one year can be forced to take any available job offer. One woman was told that an employer liked her resume and wanted to interview her. Only after a phone call did she learn that the employer was a brothel. Since prostitution is legal, German law no longer considers prostitution immoral and so jobs cannot be turned down without a risk to benefits.

Consider also the crime wave that has swept Germany following its move to legalize the sex trade.

Judy Sgro made Canada the stripper capital of the world and now the liberals want to do the same for prostitutes.

The Death of Common Sense

The following obituary was e-mailed to the Blue Maple Leaf by Mary Stansberry of Kentucky USA.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Mr. Common Sense. Mr. Sense had been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such value lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm and that life isn't always fair. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not kids, are in charge).

His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Mr. Sense declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer aspirin to a student; but, could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense finally gave up the ghost after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot, she spilled a bit in her lap, and was awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by two stepbrothers; My Rights and Ima Whiner. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on; if not, join the majority and do nothing.

The European Defense Force – Canada’s Next NATO

This article is the last of a three part series on Canada, the European Union and the New World Order. The topic of this article is the growing rift between American and EU foreign policy and the side Canada is taking.

The United States and European nations have been growing apart on defense cooperation for over a decade. When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1989, America pushed Europe to be more involved in its own defense. America has always been the largest contributor of troops and funds to NATO and they dominated NATO’s policy agenda.

The rift between the U.S. and Europe continued during the Clinton administration. Europe wanted a strong response to Bosnia, Kosovo and the genocide in Rwanda. Critics in Europe blamed Washington for acting too slowly in Bosnia and Kosovo during the 1990s. NATO soldiers did ultimately intervene in Bosnia and Kosovo, but not in Rwanda.

The Bosnia crisis was a wake-up call to European countries. They realized that without the U.S. military force they could not stop genocide on the continent. There was such a sense of shame about this among European leaders and they felt Europe should have acted much sooner to stop the ethnic cleansing and other atrocities after the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. As a result, many European governments resolved to increase Europe’s international political clout and military muscle.

Following the attacks of September 11th, the Bush administration adopted a new policy of pre-emption. America resolved to eliminate the threat of hostile nations before they materialized. This policy led to the toppling of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the removal of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. American showed contempt for NATO by ignoring it during those military campaigns, viewing the alliance as more of a post-war cleaning lady, than an effective military force.

George Bush reaffirmed his commitment to spread freedom in his state of the union address when he said to the world, “When you stand for freedom, America will stand with you”. George Bush’s quest to free people from tyranny is noble. It is also difficult and some nations of Europe are not up to the challenge.

Many European nations still favor appeasement. For them it is easier to hand the school yard bully their lunch, than risk getting hurt by removing a threat. In this respect Canada has the exact same mentality as Europe. The belief among Canadians and Europeans is that war is bad and military spending cannot be justified. Our cultures ignore the lessons of the past and deny that every freedom we have today resulted from winning the wars of the past century.

Canada and Europe have something else in common which is capacity gap. Capacity gap is the difference in capability between nations. America spends twice the amount of all European nations on defense combined. As a result, U.S. military capability far exceeds that of Canada and Europe. Canada has neglected its military for two decades leaving us with a demoralized, under funded and obsolete military. The defense priorities set out in the 2005 budget do not fix this problem. The new military spending only makes our obsolete military a little bigger. Just like Europe, our lack of a strong military favors appeasement as a matter of foreign policy.

It is not surprising that the liberals decided to change their position and not take part in ballistic missile defense. The goal of the federal liberals is to appease anti-war groups at home and America’s enemies abroad. How else can you explain Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew identifying Canada’s arctic as a priority of our strategic national defense?

The rift between Europe and America on defense matters has led the European Union to create its own European Defense Force. As well, the new European constitution creates a foreign affairs ministry designed to give the union one voice in defense matters. The countries pushing this ministry, independent of NATO, are the very same countries that oppose everything that America is doing now. They include France, Germany, Belgium and Luxemburg. The anti-American stance of the federal liberals favors moving Canada toward European defense cooperation.

Once Canada is linked to Europe in trade and defense policy, we need only adopt the common currency to become a member of the union.

Looming Canadian EU Membership - A Conspiracy Theory

This article is part two of a three part series on Canada, the European Union and the New World order. Why the liberals are setting the stage for Canadian membership in the EU.

Everyone likes a good conspiracy theory. How many times during the Iraq war did you hear talk about George Bush going to war for oil? How about all that talk of conquering Iraq to make Dick Cheney and Halliburton rich? For the liberal left, everything is a conspiracy theory. The idea that anyone would make a sacrifice to free people from tyranny is foreign to them. There must always be a selfish motivation.

It is not surprising that the left thinks this way. After all, everything they do has a selfish motivation. The sponsorship scandal was nothing more than a way to funnel taxpayer money to liberal friendly ad firms that in turn funneled money back to the liberal party. Corporate bailouts go to companies that give huge contributions back to the liberals. The liberals even offer backroom deals to strippers and pizza boys for favors. Not to be outdone, the socialist NDP fights for unions, even though unions put companies out of business and cost union members their jobs. The NDP does not seem to care about the damage unions do, so long as unions contribute to their socialist agenda.

The left in Canada views everything in terms of selfish motivation. When conservatives reduce the role of government and lower the burden of taxes on people, the left figures something must be in it for them. “They’re working for the rich!” is what they say.

Consider what the liberals have been doing lately. The Canadian economy is closely linked to the United States, yet the liberals are fomenting anti-American hatred and opposing American foreign and domestic defense policy at every step. Our domestic agenda of decriminalizing drug use forces America to clamp down at the border to prevent drugs from going south. Trade relations Between Canada and America are suffering as a result.

If the federal liberals continue to destroy the good trade relationship we have with the U.S., then the liberals will need to find a new export market for Canadian companies to keep our economy growing. Getting access to the European common market would be huge for economic growth, but access would require EU membership.

The problem with the European Union is that the socialist structure of the EU discourages wealthy countries from joining. Norway is a good example. Norway is the Saudi Arabia of Europe, awash in oil, and there is little incentive for them to join a union that will simply redistribute their wealth to other nations.

On the other hand, poor countries like Turkey are eager to join, because the European Union provides financial assistance to improve their infrastructure and economy. If people in Alberta and Ontario are sick of having their wealth paid out to have-not provinces now, imagine how Canadians will feel when all ten provinces have their wealth paid out to have-not nations like Estonia, Lithuania and Turkey.

Canada’s wealth and our trade partnership with America make EU membership a terrible proposition. But if the liberals keep undermining American defense policy and keep fomenting anti-American hatred, trade relations between our two countries will continue to suffer. As the economic impact of poor Canada-U.S. trade relations continues to hurt our economy, Canadians would welcome a more involved trading partnership with the EU to save jobs. The radical anti-American left would love nothing more than a new federal trade policy that involves severing ties with America once and for all.

As anti-American resentment grows, Canadians may even accept giving up some sovereignty in the area of domestic policy to be a part of a bigger trading block. The liberal left in both countries already point to the bad image of America as being the result of George Bush’s policies. So if Canada-U.S. trade relations bottom out, Canadians have already been conditioned to believe that it must be America’s fault. Blame would never be laid at the feet of our own liberal government.

Now consider how goods are shipped between Canada and the United States. Everything goes by train, truck or plane. Imagine how the movement of goods would be altered if trade relations with America suffered and Europe became Canada’s number one export market. If Canada joined the EU the majority of goods would travel by ship.

Can you sea where this is going?

In 2003, Paul Martin had to sell his stake in Canada Steamship lines to prevent a conflict of interest while serving as Prime Minister. CSL is by far the biggest shipping company in Canada. However, he did not sell his stake altogether. Instead, ownership of that company was transferred to his three adult sons: Paul, James and David. If Europe replaces the United States as Canada’s number one trade partner, the Martin family stands to become one of the wealthiest families on Earth by moving those goods.

It may be that Paul Martin is just selfish enough to undermine Canada’s best trade relationship in order to guarantee a Martin family dynasty.
